The Eagle and the Chicken

There’s an old, well known story of a chicken farmer who found an eagle’s egg. He put it with his chickens and soon the egg hatched. The young eagle grew up with all the other chickens and whatever they did, the eagle did too.  He thought he was a chicken, just like them.

Since the chickens could only fly for a short distance, the eagle also learnt to fly a short distance. He thought that was what he was supposed to do. So that was all that he thought he could do.

As a consequence, that was all he was able to do. One day the eagle saw a bird flying high above him. He was very impressed. “Who is that?” he asked the hens around him. “That’s the eagle, the king of the birds,” the hens told him. “He belongs to the sky. We belong to the earth, we are just chickens.”

So the eagle lived and died as a chicken, for that’s what he thought he was. I want to encourage you today that you are an eagle. You may have been brought up in a situation that limited your understanding of your potential, but it’s time now for the past to lose its hold on you. Don’t die thinking you’re a chicken. Soar high, just as you were meant to. Be all that you are meant to be!

I am being asked alot at the moment about the state of the Church. On the one side; Why aren't we having physical services? and on the other, why does the Church feel that is above the legalities of lockdown? Rock and a hardplace. Devil and the deep blue sea. Can't do right for doing right. That's life me ansome.

The issue though is different. It isn't about the building being open, cos the Church is open. We are here everyday at the end of a phone,an email, a request, we are providing services, thoughts, guidance, food and all levels of support. The Church is open. And we need to look to ourselves as to how we can better be the Church.

We are all blessed with friends, but do they feel blessed by us? Do they feel our daily love and our daily prayers. There is so much that is wrong with the world. There is so much that is right. Do others feel that we spend time on them, for them, with them? There is so much in life that we would not contemplate without the support of friendship, and that is what the Church, the people of God are here for, to inspire, give hope, support, inspiration.

We all struggle with the neagtive side of life, but we need to put that in its place and focus on what is good, what is possible, what is hopeful, because the alternative is not great.

We are all called, whether we see ourselves as "church" or not, to be there for one another, to look out for one another. This is prayer. Prayer looks out not in, is external not internal is embracing and inclusive.

So is the Church open, the Church is, that is our hearts are, and the building will soon follow, but let us get our hearts in the right place, for that is what we are called to do.
