Easter- The Characters in the Story The Roman Soldier

Responses are from a liturgy used on Iona- Wildgoose Publications

Where Christ Walks We will follow

Where Christ stumbles We will stop

Where Christ cries We will listen

Where Christ suffers We will hurt

When Christ dies We will bow our heads in Sorrow

When Christ rises again in glory We will share his endless joy.

Imgaine the Roman Soldier saying; "This is a real pain, all these people yelling and shouting. What does this Jewish prophet have to inspire so much passion? Trying to keep him on his feet is difficult. He’s fallen three times. I’m not sure he’s even a prophet, let alone the Son of God. Well I’ll make sure he’s dead, even if I have to put a spear in his side. Jesus will be forgotten in a week, just mark my words."

There are things in our ives we dont really understand, and lack of knowledge provokes fear. Fear manifests itself in two extreme ways:-

first- in the words of Trump "Fake news", where because we can't see or understand we dismiss out of hand

second- panic, leading us to do totally the wrong thing.

The soldier didn't understand  the enormity of the emotions that Jesus inspired so he was nonchalant. Then when it came to it, Jesus was dead, they would have known that, but the soldier then reacted unnecessarily by putting the spear in the side just to make sure.

Some people get the right balance between fear and reaction. Alot of us don't that is what we need to work on, as individuals, a community and a race.

Prayer Heavenly Lord, it is through faith that we believe. Help us keep our hearts and minds firmly on you, that through confusions of life we may hold onto our core values and not get swept away in fear and anxiety.Amen
