So, the New Testament starts with the birth of Jesus. Well actually it starts with his birth being foretold. When the Angel came to Mary and said- hey you. Don’t watch that, watch this, you’re pregnant, its the heavy heavy sound of One Step Beyond, to use 70/80’s speak. This is known as the annunciation The announcement). Mary’s response was one of humble supplication without real understanding:- “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Mary then went and visited her cousin Elizabeth and when they met this was Mary’ song known as the Magnificat:- “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
So, in essence she is saying, I'm not going to worry about the things I cannot acheive, I shall concentrate on the things I can do, limited and small as they may seem. For it is in the small acts of kindness we change the world.
