What is our role in society, are we pawns in a spiritual game as reading the book of Job in its entirety would lead us to believe? Is creation ours to abuse as we wish because it is a gift to us, or because it is ours, because we are the dominant species. Are we stewards of creation part of it because we have more ability and we more ability we have more responsibility. I would go for that.
The book of Hebrews when quoting the Old testament says that we are a little lower than the angels. Angels are messengers, and so we are messengers, perhaps FedEx as opposed to Royal Mail, but messengers, messengers of what. Now it is at this point that we could get all over the place. Messengers of God, but how do we know, God says kill your Son; God says kill the Muslims, the Christians, the Jews. In the mouths of the mentally ill God can apparently say a lot of things. So perhaps we spread the message of Jesus- yet the message of Jesus is widespread, love your neighbour and yet those who don't hate the brothers and sisters aren't follow of his.So maybe as we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit perhaps we should just spread the message that the Spirit gives us, but yet again how do we know, what is God’s message and what is not.
So of course we refer to the Bible, and essentially we must refer to the message of the whole bible, not just passages that we kind important- because we all find different passages important at different times- and we cant say we don’t have passages that speak to us more than any other. Because we are after the meaning of life, essentially when we understand what life is about, what our responsibility is- and ours responsibility out s total, for creation, for ourselves, for one another. in which case then we are searching for the meaning of life. What is life all about?? Why are we here? What is the point? Why are we here? I’ve asked myself several times this question and Ive also heard several people have asked the same question- why is he still here. And the answer is of course, that’s life! The lyrics to the Sinatra song:-
That's life (that's life) that's what people say You're riding high in April Shot down in May But I know I'm gonna change that tune When I'm back on top, back on top in June I said, that's life (that's life) and as funny as it may seem Some people get their kicks Stompin' on a dream But I don't let it, let it get me down 'Cause this fine old world it keeps spinnin' around I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate A poet, a pawn and a king I've been up and down and over and out And I know one thing Each time I find myself flat on my face I pick myself up and get back in the race That's life (that's life) I tell ya, I can't deny it I thought of quitting, baby But my heart just ain't gonna buy it And if I didn't think it was worth one single try I'd jump right on a big bird and then I'd fly.
That is life, but what is the meaning behind it:- well we all know the answer is 42, but how do we get there- It was back in the old days and my parents was into this new age wisdom and spirituality and stuff. Well, one day they heard of this special guru who knew the meaning of life in the universe, so my dad drove from St Austell to Gatwick and caught a plane to India. When the plane landed in India he took a train. When the train got to the end of its track he got off and rented a jeep. He drove the jeep to the foothills of the mountains and borrowed a donkey. He rode the donkey until the donkey could go no further and then walked up the mountain to the guru's cave. He entered the cave and he told the guru that he had come to find the meaning of life in the universe. The guru said that the meaning of life in the universe was mushrooms. At first my Dad was confused but the more the he thought about it the more of his questions were answered by mushrooms. My dad ran out of the cave and down the mountain. At the bottom of the mountain he got back on to the donkey and rode the donkey to the jeep. He drove the jeep to the train and took the train to the plane. He took the plane to Gatwick and drove his car back to St Austell. My dad told us all that the meaning to life in the universe was mushrooms! But they said no and he could not answer any of their other questions, so he decided that mushrooms were not the meaning of life in the universe. So he drove from St Austell to Gatwick airport and caught a plane to India. When the plane landed in India he took a train as far as it would go. When the train got to the end of its track he got off and rented a jeep and he drove the jeep to the foothills of the mountains and borrowed a donkey. He rode the donkey until the donkey could go no further and then walked up the mountain to the guru's cave. He entered the cave and he told the guru that the meaning to life in the universe was NOT mushrooms. The guru said, "Well then it must be turnips.”
And it might as well be, as Christians we believe that the meaning of life is there and obvious. We are even life, so we need to live. We are given breath, so we need to breathe. We are given intelligence so we need to problem solve, we are given love so we need to love, we are given emotions to express inner feelings so we must express ourselves. We have an importance in life, a responsibility, an accountability, and that is what we respond to. You may not get it always right, we may not understand , but we get that we can achieve, we can change, we can influence and therefore we acknowledge that there is something in life that we can respond to. Life is living, living is now- now is the present. The present is us. How do we respond?
